MICHAEL COULDN’T THINK straight.

Every thought he could muster slipped through his brain without leaving the slightest trace of meaning behind. He stood fixed to the floor, unable to breathe, unable to move; his insides felt as though he swallowed a large, jagged ice cube. The tall doctor, unaware of Michael’s paralysis, patted him gingerly on the shoulder, wished him the best of luck, and then walked back over to stand with the other doctors. They all gave him defeated looks before turning toward the door.

Michael watched the doctors scramble out of the room until the number of people with medical degrees standing in front of him reached the count of none. He squeezed his eyes shut and then pressed the heels of his palms against them, hoping beyond all hope this act would hone in his focus. He pressed harder against his eyes in an attempt to keep his scattered thoughts from spattering out of his head and onto the cold, hard floor.

In his mind’s eye, he could see spilled thoughts spreading along the tiles the way spilled milk splashes out of an upturned glass. He held his hands there until first, white-and-blue stars popped under his eyelids like firecrackers, and then second, a long, bright stream of reddish-orange light covered him. He didn’t know how much more of this he could handle. How did he end up here? He wondered madly to himself, removing his hands from his eyes, the red stream gone. How could these be his choices? And honestly, did he truly have a choice to make: his wife’s remaining life or his— wait, was she his child?

It seemed strange to think of Raven as anything other than his little princess, but was she? She wasn’t, if you believed the results of the blood work. And he did. Men lie, women lie, but blood work––not so much. She was someone else’s baby, and he had a pretty good idea who that someone else was. Oh yeah, he had a real good idea. He had no proof, but what he had was a strong gut feeling—an old cop’s hunch. Something to cling to until proven otherwise.

That’s enough about that now. Zendaya was dead. That was the truth of it. Nothing could change this. They were surprised she lasted this long, especially when he was told on the day of the accident she wouldn’t live twenty-four hours. But here she was, alive yet dead. She was suffering from the one thing doctors never found a cure for: death. It was like she was waiting around for him to discover the entire story for himself before she would pass on. Before she would let go of the little life left to her. He was close. He could feel it. All the stars were beginning to align. And it started with the preacher.

Deep down, however, down where the most sinister of thoughts dwelled, was this other thing, this suspicious feeling Zendaya was mocking him coldly, boldly. She had cheated on him and gotten away with it.
